240 GSM French Terry — Why Cool Bee Uses the Best Fabric for Oversized Tees
Share
When Indian men and women shop for oversized t-shirts, most never look at the fabric specification. They look at the graphic, the price, maybe the size. But the single most important factor determining whether a ₹899 oversized tee still looks and feels great after fifty washes — or falls apart after ten — is the fabric weight and construction. This is why Cool Bee specifically chose 240 GSM French Terry for every oversized tee in our collection.
What is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square metre — it measures how much fabric material is packed into each square metre of the textile. The higher the GSM, the heavier and denser the fabric. For oversized t-shirts, this translates directly to several important qualities: how the garment drapes (heavier drapes better), how opaque it is (denser fabrics do not become transparent), how well it holds its shape across washing (denser constructions resist stretching and misshaping), and how the garment feels against the skin.
What is French Terry?
French Terry is a specific cotton knit construction: loops on one side (the interior), smooth on the other (the exterior you see). This looped construction does two important things: it traps air between the loops, creating effective insulation and ventilation simultaneously; and it creates a soft, cushioned interior texture that feels significantly more comfortable than standard jersey cotton. French Terry is used by premium global streetwear brands — Stüssy, Champion, Palace — because it delivers a combination of weight, comfort, and breathability that standard jersey cannot match.
Why 240 GSM Specifically?
GSM 160–180: The standard for cheap Indian streetwear tees. Transparent when wet. Loses shape after a few washes. Feels flimsy. The tee that looks good in the shop and disappoints in use.
GSM 180–200: Better, used by some quality Indian brands. Acceptable weight but lacks the substantial drape that gives oversized tees their characteristic look.
GSM 220–240: Premium territory. The weight that delivers the proper oversized drape — enough substance to fall cleanly from the shoulder and hold the silhouette. Cool Bee uses the top of this range at 240 GSM.
GSM 260+: Heavy — more suitable for hoodies and sweatshirts. Too warm for India's climate as a tee.
240 GSM is the optimal specification for Indian oversized tees: heavy enough to drape properly, maintain shape, and stay opaque; light enough to be breathable in India's conditions.
The Practical Difference — What 240 GSM French Terry Means for You
After 50 washes: Our tees look essentially the same as when you bought them. The 240 GSM construction resists the stretching and shape-loss that lower-weight fabrics exhibit.
Opaque in all conditions: No transparency even when wet or in strong direct light. This matters for white tees particularly — a 160 GSM white tee becomes see-through in Indian sunlight.
Print longevity: Denser fabric holds water-based pigment prints better. Our graphics maintain vibrancy because the fabric beneath them has the density to properly bond with the print chemistry.
Comfort across uses: The looped French Terry interior stays soft against the skin even after repeated washing — unlike standard jersey which can pill and feel rough after prolonged use.
How to Care for 240 GSM French Terry to Maximise Longevity
Machine wash inside out (protects the graphic) on cold cycle. Tumble dry low or hang dry — never high heat. Do not iron directly over the print. Dry in shade for dark colours (prevents colour shift). Following these four steps consistently means your Cool Bee oversized tee should last three to five years of regular wear.
