The Sustainability Conversation Indian Fashion Brands Are Avoiding
The Indian fashion industry is the fourth largest in the world by volume. It is also among the most environmentally intensive: textile dyeing and treatment is responsible for 20% of global industrial water pollution, and India is among the world's largest contributors to this category. Fast fashion's growth in India — fuelled by the same democratisation of fashion information and increasing consumer spending power that has driven streetwear's rise — has a shadow side that the brands profiting from it prefer not to discuss in detail.
At Cool Bee, we are not a sustainability-first brand in the marketing sense. We are not certified organic, we do not make carbon-neutral claims, and we do not use greenwashing language. The Environmental Reality of Fast Fashion in India
The Microplastics Problem
Polyester — the dominant fabric in Indian budget fashion, particularly at the ₹200–₹499 price tier — is derived from petroleum. Every wash of a polyester garment releases hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibres into wastewater. These microplastics are too small to be filtered by conventional sewage treatment plants. They enter waterways, accumulate in marine and freshwater ecosystems, and have been detected in human blood, lungs, and placentas in multiple studies since 2020.
The Indian fast fashion consumer who buys 30 polyester garments per year and washes them weekly is contributing a meaningful volume of microplastics to India's already-stressed water systems. This is not a moral argument — it is a physics argument. Synthetic fibres shedding microplastics is an unavoidable mechanical consequence of their structure.
The Water Consumption Issue
Conventional cotton production is water-intensive. It takes approximately 2,700 litres of water to produce the cotton for a single standard t-shirt — a fact cited frequently in sustainability critiques of cotton garments. This is a legitimate concern, particularly in water-stressed regions of India where cotton is grown (Vidarbha in Maharashtra, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat).
However, the comparison point matters: cotton's water footprint, while high, is a known quantity that is well-documented and has been the subject of significant improvement efforts. Polyester's environmental footprint — petroleum extraction, polymerisation chemistry, microplastic release over the garment's life, and end-of-life non-biodegradability — is less discussed but more concerning across most environmental metrics beyond initial water use.
Linen (flax-based) requires significantly less water than cotton — approximately 15 litres per tonne of fibre versus cotton's much higher requirements — and is grown with minimal pesticide use in most production regions. Linen is genuinely among the most environmentally benign textile fibres available.
Fast Fashion's Longevity Problem
The sustainability calculation that the fashion industry least wants to perform publicly is the longevity comparison. A ₹299 polyester t-shirt that becomes unwearable within 6 months (25–30 washes) requires two or more replacement purchases per year. A ₹999 natural-fibre garment that remains wearable for 3 years at the same wash frequency requires one purchase over that same period at one-third the cost per wear.
The fast fashion business model is structurally dependent on rapid obsolescence creating repeat purchases. The slow fashion model is structurally dependent on longevity creating fewer purchases. From a raw material, energy, and waste perspective, the fast fashion model is dramatically less efficient even before considering quality of experience.
Natural Fibres in Practice — Cotton, Linen, and French Terry
100% Cotton and French Terry
The t-shirts and bottoms in Cool Bee's range use 100% cotton or cotton French Terry. This makes them biodegradable (a t-shirt buried in a garden will decompose; a polyester tee will not), free of synthetic microplastic shedding, and more breathable in Indian conditions. High-quality 240 GSM cotton French Terry is bought less frequently than low-quality 160 GSM cotton jersey — because it lasts 3–4 times longer under equivalent use. Fewer purchases = fewer production cycles = lower aggregate environmental cost per year of wearing a t-shirt.
Linen
Linen is among the most environmentally benign natural textile fibres. Flax grows in poor soil with minimal water requirements, uses no pesticides in most production contexts, and the entire plant is usable (seeds for linseed oil, fibres for linen, woody stems for other materials). Linen fabric is fully biodegradable at end of life. And as we have documented in our linen shirt guides, it provides the best performance of any natural fibre in Indian summer conditions.
What Cool Bee Does Not Use
We do not use polyester blends in our clothing line. Not in our t-shirts, not in our shirts, not in our bottoms. This is a quality decision that happens to align with environmental preference. Polyester blends produce worse fabrics for Indian conditions (less breathable, less moisture-managing, feel synthetic against skin) AND worse environmental outcomes (microplastic shedding, non-biodegradable). The quality argument and the environmental argument point in the same direction: natural fibres.
The Slow Fashion Buying Framework
The most actionable sustainability contribution an Indian fashion consumer can make is not switching to a certified "green" brand (though that has value). It is changing purchasing behaviour:
Buy Fewer, Better Pieces
Three quality natural-fibre pieces that last three years have a dramatically lower aggregate environmental footprint than thirty synthetic fast fashion pieces purchased and discarded over the same period. This is mathematics, not ideology.
Prioritise Natural Fibres
When choosing between equivalent products, natural fibre options (100% cotton, linen, French Terry) should be preferred over synthetic or synthetic-blend options. They perform better in Indian conditions, last longer, and do not shed microplastics.
Care for What You Have
Extending garment life is the highest-impact individual sustainability action available. Cold water washing extends colour life. Air drying extends structural life. Inside-out washing protects graphics. A garment that lasts twice as long at the same cost per unit is a 50% reduction in clothing environmental footprint without any other change.
Repair Before Replace
The Indian tradition of mending — once a practical necessity, now a deliberate choice — is one of the most sustainable fashion practices available. A quality natural-fibre garment that develops a seam issue, a button loss, or minor fabric stress can be repaired and used for additional years. A quality piece is worth repairing; a cheap synthetic piece often is not.

Is polyester clothing bad for the environment?
