Why Does Your T-Shirt Graphic Crack After 10 Washes?
If you have ever bought a graphic t-shirt in India — from a streetwear brand, a market stall, or an online marketplace — you have almost certainly experienced this: the graphic looks great when you first buy it, acceptable after 5 washes, questionable after 10, and cracked, faded, or partially peeling by wash 20. At that point the tee might still be structurally fine but the graphic that was the reason for buying it is functionally destroyed.
This is not a storage problem. It is not a washing problem (unless you are actively misusing the tee, which we will address). It is a printing technology problem. And understanding the difference between the two primary t-shirt printing technologies used in India will make you a dramatically better buyer — and explain exactly why Cool Bee's graphic tees look and feel different from the majority of what is available in the Indian market.
The Two Primary T-Shirt Printing Methods in India
Plastisol Screen Printing — What Most Indian Brands Use
Plastisol is a PVC-based ink that is applied to fabric through a screen-printing process. Here is the critical thing to understand about how it works:
Plastisol ink sits ON TOP of the fabric fibres. It does not bond with them.
When you apply heat to cure a plastisol print, the ink solidifies into a plastic-like layer on the surface of the fabric. This layer has flexibility, which is why it can withstand some washing without cracking. But it is fundamentally a foreign layer sitting on top of the fabric, adhered by surface tension and curing heat rather than chemical bonding at the fibre level.
The consequences over time are predictable:
- Cracking: Every time the tee is washed, dried, worn, and stretched, the plastisol layer flexes. Over repeated cycles, micro-cracks develop in the surface layer. Initially imperceptible, they accumulate until the graphic visibly cracks. This typically happens within 15–25 washes for standard plastisol applications on Indian t-shirts.
- Peeling: In cheaper applications with lower cure quality, plastisol can begin to peel at edges — particularly at fine detail areas and the perimeter of the graphic — from as early as 5–10 washes.
- Fading: The PVC layer is not dye-penetrative. Repeated washing gradually removes surface pigment from the plastisol, causing colour fading.
- Tactile plastic feel: Plastisol prints feel like plastic to the touch because they are. Run your fingers over a plastisol-printed graphic and you can feel the raised, slightly rubbery surface sitting above the fabric. This feel diminishes but does not disappear even in premium plastisol applications.
Why does virtually every budget Indian t-shirt brand use plastisol?
Economics. Plastisol inks are cheaper. The printing process is faster and requires less specialised equipment. The curing process is simpler. For a market producing t-shirts at ₹80–₹150 manufacturing cost, plastisol is the only economically viable graphic application method. The resulting product cracking within a year is not a concern for brands operating in a volume-turnover, low-unit-value model.
Water-Based Pigment Printing — The Cool Bee Standard
Water-based pigment printing is fundamentally different from plastisol at the chemistry level:
Water-based pigment ink bonds AT and INTO the fibre. It does not sit on top of it.
Water-based pigment inks contain dye or pigment particles suspended in a water medium with binders. During the curing process, the binders activate and the pigment particles migrate into the fibre structure rather than forming a surface layer. The result is ink that is, for practical purposes, part of the fabric itself.
The consequences for durability:
- No cracking: There is no separate surface layer to crack. The ink has penetrated the fibre. Washing, stretching, and wearing does not create a cracking mechanism — the print stretches and moves with the fabric because it is bonded to the fabric.
- No peeling: For the same reason — there is no separate layer to peel. The graphic exists as dyed or pigmented fibres, not a plastic film on top of fibres.
- Colour retention: Water-based pigment printing retains colour through 100+ washes without significant fading when the tee is cared for correctly. The pigment is bonded at the fibre level and is not being progressively removed by washing mechanics.
- Soft hand-feel: Because there is no raised plastic layer, water-based printed graphics feel like fabric. You can feel the weave of the fabric through the graphic. The soft, natural hand-feel is one of the most immediately appreciable differences for Indian buyers touching the two print types side-by-side.
Why don't most Indian brands use water-based printing?
Cost and complexity. Water-based pigment inks cost more per unit. The process requires more precise curing management — temperature and dwell time must be precisely controlled for proper bonding. Fine detail and photographic gradients require advanced printing equipment. For volume operations producing millions of units at minimal margins, the investment in water-based printing infrastructure is not economically justified.

How to Tell the Difference Before Buying
The Touch Test
Run your fingertips across the graphic area. If you feel a raised, slightly rubbery surface, it is plastisol. If you feel the fabric texture through the graphic with minimal surface change, it is water-based or DTG (direct-to-garment, another quality method).
The Fold Test
Fold the tee so the graphic is on the fold line and press. If you see immediate cracking or whitening at the fold line, it is low-quality plastisol. A quality water-based graphic should show no cracking under the fold test.
The Light Test
Hold the tee at an angle in bright light. A plastisol graphic has a distinctive shine from the surface PVC layer. A water-based graphic has the same matte quality as the fabric itself — no surface sheen from the print layer.
Ask the Brand
Any brand genuinely using water-based printing will say so prominently and explain why. If a brand does not specify their printing method when asked directly, assume plastisol. It is the hiding-in-plain-sight default of the Indian market.
DTG (Direct-to-Garment) — The Third Method
DTG printing uses inkjet technology adapted for fabric. Water-based inks are printed directly from a digital file onto the fabric surface. Quality DTG produces results similar to water-based screen printing in terms of durability and hand-feel. It is particularly strong for photographic-quality or very high detail prints that are difficult to achieve in screen printing of any type.
DTG is more expensive than either plastisol or water-based screen printing and is most commonly used for small runs and custom printing. Several premium Indian custom tee services use DTG.

How to Care for Water-Based Printed T-Shirts
While water-based printing dramatically outperforms plastisol, proper care maximises longevity:
- Wash inside out: Protects the graphic from abrasive contact with other garments
- Cold water only: Hot water can loosen even bonded pigment over time
- Gentle cycle, low spin: Reduces mechanical stress on all parts of the tee
- Air dry: Tumble drying on high heat accelerates all fabric and print aging
- No bleach or harsh chemicals: Chemical treatments degrade pigment bonding

Why does my t-shirt graphic crack after washing?
