What Makes a Good Graphic Tee? 6 Things to Check Before You Buy

Prince (Fabric Expert and Fashion Garment Designer, 15 years of experience in Garments Design)

A good graphic tee has 6 things you can verify before buying: fabric weight of at least 220 GSM, a water-based or discharge print (not thick plastisol), a genuine drop-shoulder cut (not just a larger standard size), a pre-shrunk or ringspun cotton base, consistent print registration (edges sharp, not fuzzy), and an honest colour that holds after washing. If a tee passes all six, it will look good for years. If it fails two or more, you are buying something that will deteriorate within months.

Check 1: How Heavy Should a Good Graphic Tee's Fabric Be?

At least 220 GSM (grams per square metre), and ideally 240 GSM for a graphic tee you intend to wear regularly. Fabric weight is the single most accurate proxy for how well a tee will hold its structure, drape, and print integrity over time.

Below 180 GSM: the fabric is thin, often semi-transparent, and will stretch and lose shape after a few washes. The print is also more likely to crack or peel because the fabric base does not provide enough support to the print layer. Above 220 GSM: the fabric drapes well, does not cling, holds its shape wash after wash, and provides the surface density that a clean graphic print requires.

Most budget tees in India are 140 to 160 GSM. Most quality streetwear tees are 220 to 260 GSM. If the product listing does not mention GSM, treat that as a warning and check the brand's full product spec page.

Check 2: What Type of Print Makes a Good Graphic Tee?

Water-based pigment printing and discharge printing are the two techniques that result in a graphic that ages well. Plastisol printing and vinyl heat transfers are the two techniques that crack and peel.

  • Water-based pigment: the ink sits in the fabric rather than on top of it. The print has a soft, slightly broken texture from new. It fades slowly and evenly with washing, developing character similar to a vintage tee. Does not crack or peel.
  • Discharge printing: the dye is removed from the base fabric rather than added. Results in a print that is completely flush with the fabric surface. Very soft hand feel. Good for dark base colours.
  • Plastisol: a thick, rubber-like ink layer sitting on top of the fabric. Looks bold when new. Cracks and peels when the adhesion between the print layer and the fabric surface fails, which typically begins between 30 and 80 washes depending on care.
  • Vinyl / heat transfer: the fastest and cheapest printing method. The shortest lifespan. Begins peeling within 20 to 40 washes.

Check 3: Is It a Genuine Oversized Cut or Just a Bigger Size?

For graphic tees that are sold as oversized, the cut is a specific construction, not just a larger version of a standard tee. A genuine oversized tee has a drop shoulder: the seam joining the sleeve to the body sits below the natural shoulder point. This creates the relaxed drape that defines the look.

A standard tee in a larger size creates bunching at the shoulder joint and excess fabric in the wrong places. The drop shoulder construction redirects that fabric into the body and sleeve in a way that drapes cleanly. If you are buying a graphic tee specifically for an oversized look, check the product description for "drop shoulder" or look at the product image closely for where the sleeve seam sits relative to the shoulder.

Check 4: What Cotton Quality Should a Graphic Tee Use?

Ringspun cotton and combed cotton are the two quality tiers worth looking for. Both have longer, smoother fibres than standard carded cotton, which means a smoother surface for printing and a softer feel that does not deteriorate with washing. Standard carded cotton is coarser and develops a rough texture and pilling faster.

Pre-shrunk or pre-washed cotton matters for fit longevity. If the cotton has not been pre-shrunk, the first wash will cause significant shrinkage that changes the fit and may distort the print if the shrinkage is uneven.

Check 5: How Do You Tell if a Graphic Tee's Print Quality Is Good?

Look at the print edges in the product photos at the highest resolution available. A quality graphic print has sharp, clean edges where the ink meets the fabric base. A lower-quality print shows fuzziness, bleed, or uneven ink density at the edges.

Also check for print registration on multi-colour graphics: all layers of ink should align precisely. Misaligned layers (where one colour is offset from another) is a sign of lower-quality print equipment or process control. At the distances used in streetwear photography (arm's length to a metre), misalignment is visible as a blurring or shadow effect around the graphic.

Check 6: How Do You Check Colour Fastness Before Buying a Graphic Tee?

You cannot test colour fastness before buying, but you can look for indicators. Brands that use reactive dyes on the fabric base (rather than direct dyes) and water-based inks on the graphic produce colours that are more resistant to fading. Look for any mention of reactive-dyed cotton or water-based printing in the product description.

After buying, the first wash will tell you a lot. If the water in your washing machine runs noticeably coloured after the first cold wash, the dyes are not well-fixed. A well-fixed dye releases minimal colour on first wash and negligible colour thereafter.

Why These Checks Matter More for Graphic Tees in India

Indian conditions accelerate the failure modes of a low-quality graphic tee:

  • Heat and humidity: high ambient temperatures and monsoon humidity both stress fabric and print bonds more than temperate conditions. A plastisol print that lasts 60 washes in a European climate may show cracking at 30 washes in India.
  • Frequent washing: the heat and humidity of India's climate require more frequent washing than cooler climates. More washes means more opportunities for print and fabric degradation.
  • Hard water: many parts of India have hard tap water, which can be harsher on both cotton fibre and print adhesion than soft water. A higher-quality cotton and print combination handles hard water better.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can you tell if a graphic tee is good quality?

Check fabric weight (220 GSM minimum), print type (water-based or discharge, not plastisol), whether it has a genuine drop shoulder construction, the cotton quality (ringspun or combed), print edge sharpness (visible in product photos), and any mention of reactive dyeing. All six checks tell you more than the price alone.

What GSM is best for a graphic tee?

220 to 240 GSM for everyday wear. At this weight, the fabric holds its shape, drapes cleanly, and provides the surface density for a sharp graphic print. Below 180 GSM is too thin for a quality graphic tee.

Is plastisol or water-based better for graphic tees?

Water-based printing ages better. Plastisol looks bold when new but cracks and peels as the ink layer separates from the fabric over repeated washes. Water-based prints fade gradually and evenly, developing character similar to vintage tees.

What is the difference between a cheap and an expensive graphic tee?

Fabric weight, print technique, and cotton quality. A cheap tee uses thin carded cotton (140 to 160 GSM) with a vinyl or plastisol print. An expensive tee uses heavier ringspun or combed cotton (220 to 260 GSM) with a water-based or discharge print. The difference in longevity is substantial.

How do you test a graphic tee's print quality before buying online?

Zoom into the product images at the highest available resolution and look at the print edges. Sharp, consistent edges indicate quality print equipment and process control. Fuzzy or uneven edges indicate lower quality. Also check if the brand discloses the printing technique; the disclosure itself is a quality signal.
